Genvid Technologies, Intel, Outfront Media and Streamline Media Group turned a billboard in Times Square into an interactive game.
The game was Project Monarch, an ambitious live public test of a prototype that allows players to manipulate objects on the billboard while using their cell phones as controllers.
The demo used a combination of Intel’s Smart Edge technology and Genvid’s interactive livestream solution. The successful two-day test was held from September 8 to 9 at the Mega Screen in 1500 Broadway and West 43rd Street in Manhattan, and it used a custom adaptation of Streamline’s game Bake a Switch to unleash the potential for a new kind. ” mobile crowd games. ”
Anyone who visited the site could connect as an interactive viewer with their own phone by simply scanning a QR code on the Mega Screen to access the interactive stream via a nearby 5G-connected hotspot (courtesy of the private network provider Sky Packets). Genvid has developed a cloud game technology that can stream game video to just about any device, including the digital billboard in Times Square. While the players were playing the game on their phones, they could see the results on the big billboard. This experiment has shown that even the most modern digital billboards can be re-imagined, Navok said.
The technology requires the advanced 5G network supported by Intel’s technology, as the video is likely to stutter on the smartphones of users playing the game, Navok said. The collaboration shows a new service that can be customized for consumers in the retail and gaming markets, said Caroline Chan, vice president of Intel, in a statement.
“There was no waiting time to play,” Navok said. ‘It was broadcast for bystanders to see. It was the first public demonstration of a hybrid digital billboard and mobile game.
Navok first met Intel in 2019, as the chip giant wanted to show what would happen if you had 5G devices in a large open space where everyone could participate. The project was ready last year, but when the pandemic started, the companies had to stop it – at least until the crowd returned to Times Square, Navok said.
The original plan was to give people 5G smartphones to demonstrate the game, but it also turned out that this was not a good idea in the pandemic, as sharing phones means sharing germs. So the team went to work again to get people to use their own phones on a fast private 5G network.

“We deliberately designed the experience so that there are other people physically present with whom you could talk while you play,” Navok said. “It meant you could work together and connect with other people to give them suggestions to help them play.”
Navok said the opportunities to stream games and make great exhibits in interactive games are endless, as you can do the same in stadiums, arenas, billboards, subways and elsewhere. These opportunities will increase as 5G becomes pervasive. Genvid streamed the game via Twitch and YouTube to the billboard and smartphones.
“I think there’s an opportunity in the advertising space, where you keep people captive and look at different screens,” he said. “The concept was successful. It remains to be seen how we commercialize it. ”
Navok hopes games will become more and more social, as the business Competition Peak game that enabled many people to control AI characters in a game on Facebook.
